Health Benefits of Beer

One of my favorite reasons to drink beer is that it is good for me. Okay, that may be a stretch; but when beer is consumed in moderation, it does reduce the chances of strokes, heart attacks and poor circulation. When used as a nightcap, the right beer can help relax your body and allow you to fall asleep faster. All things must be kept in moderation though. Beer is like water— boats will float on it, but sink in it too!

Beer has many of the same health benefits that wine boasts, and can actually be healthier. Beer prevents the buildup of an amino acid called homocysteine, which is linked to heart disease. Wine has been known to slow the buildup of this acid while beer prevents it from forming at all. What prevents homocysteine from forming in your bloodstream is the vitamin B6, which is found in all beers.

Studies have shown that those who drink beer in moderation are at a 30-40% lower risk for coronary disease and stroke than those who do not drink alcohol at all. The presence of alcohol in beer also helps blood circulation and increases the amount of good cholesterol in your bloodstream. Finally, beer contains quite a few antioxidants and is fat free.

Drinking beer is also a great way to relieve stress and can be used as a natural sleep aid. It is known to have a relaxing effect on your body that results in a “feel good” type feeling that will help reduce tension and take your mind away from the worries and problems that are stressing you out and keeping you awake. All of these benefits exist when beer is consumed in moderation however, so don’t view this as a license to drink as if the world is running out of cereal grains.

Over drinking is most commonly known for contributing to liver disease, and it may cause cancer as well. You do not need to go on a mission to drink every single microbrew in a single evening or join a hundred beer clubs. Just take it easy and drink beer for the enjoyment and aesthetic qualities that it possesses. If you enroll yourself in a beer of the month club and enjoy one or two beers per day, you will be on the road to tapping all of beer’s many health benefits while avoiding all the risks.
