State Pen Porter by Santa Fe Brewing Company

This beer is what you’d expect from a good porter.  The color is a deep dark brown with a beige head that’s fluffy and takes a while to subside.

Right off the bat you get that roasted coffee smell in a big way.   You can also taste the coffee flavor along with the malts that taste-wise have a molasses quality.  There are hints of herbal/grassy hops mixed in with a mild citrus tang that’s left on the palate.  Also in the flavor mix is a fruit taste; characteristics of prune come through.  This porter would be a great pairing for slow cooked meats.
